  • About

Plein air is about painting out of doors in the open air. During the hours that I pass carefully studying a subject, I am influenced by all the sights, sounds, smells, and the feel of a place. I must intensely concentrate to translate the mood and scene to canvas. Foggy and cool, bright and warm, windy yet hot: how to communicate all the aspects of the scene? During these sessions I am often able to lay down with paint most of my sensations of a place. At the end of several hours, I put the painting away in my carry case. Back in the studio and days later, I pull it out to discover it anew. With fresh eyes I see what still needs to develop: brighter highlights, a cleaner sky, grasses with more texture and richer color. At this stage I employ my memory and imagination to take the painting to completion.
At times I choose to enlarge a painting, which requires that the scene was especially exciting in some way. Perhaps the sea waves were crashing and the sea foam colors appealed to me. Sometime I have a particularly memorable interaction at the location. Again, both my memory and imagination are engaged to transmit the enthusiasm I feel for my subject.
I hope my paintings will stimulate your memory of the inspiration that nature provides. A painting can take you back in time to a location that has brought you peace and comfort., and be a daily reminder of the joy nature brings.
